New Leadership in Community Change – All Welcome!!
August 6, 2009, San Francisco, CA 94118 - The first of many breath taking historic moments will begin on August 16, 2009 at 11:00AM in San Francisco at the First A.M.E. Zion Church of San Francisco, 2159 Golden Gate Ave. San Francisco, CA and everyone is welcome to partake and every Sunday there after. Reverend Malcolm J. Byrd, will officiate his first service as the newly appointed Pastor of the First A.M.E. Zion Church. Reverend Byrd’s enthralling uplifting message to the community of “wholeness of self” is backed by his spiritual calling and his 140 year ancestry from a long line of African American blue bloods of social activism.
His sermons offer cherished hope with oracle delivery like no other – you will hear highly expressive English with lines from Shakespeare as he’s harvested a great love and regard for education – eloquent, refined and heartfelt. Individuals from all ethnic groups travel for miles around to hear him.
With austere humility Reverend Byrd offers up historic impactful change where ever he goes and is one to be watched. At 25 years old, he is one of the youngest pastors in the history of the church - he shows colossal promise, as being noted, over the next decades as a dynamic spiritual leader and thinker of social progress. We are so very fortunate to have him in San Francisco.
He attended Livingstone College, a historically black college in North Carolina and is a graduate of the State University of New York at Purchase. While serving as Pastor of the Clinton Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church in Greenport, NY, Reverend Byrd increased membership numbers by 33%. He also served as the Executive Minister of the historic Mother A.M.E. Zion Church in New York City, the oldest Black Church in New York State. He comes to San Francisco after serving as Senior Pastor of the Varick Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, Brooklyn, NY, where he increased congregational stewardship by 81% and new memberships by 11%.
With many diverse affiliations to youth councils, philanthropic foundations, community outreach, service in hospitals and more it has given him great influence in the affairs of the communities he has served. He belongs to the Young Professionals of the National Urban League, NAACP, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Prince Hall Masonry and American Academy of Religion to name a few (see complete list below). Reverend Byrd also interned at the White House.
As the first lady of the First A.M.E. Zion Church, Dominique Jackson-Byrd, wife and partner, offers community leadership for us all to look up to and is a breath of fresh air. Her role will be multifaceted assisting her husband in day-to-day events of the church and attending to her own career. As a graduate of Mount Holyoke College in 2004, the oldest institution of higher learning for women in the nation with studies at La Universidad de Valencia in Spain, she has a self-designed major in mass media and Spanish. As an accomplished actress and model – she has appeared on television shows such as “All My Children”, “The Tyra Banks Show”, national print advertisements for Toys R Us, Exxon Mobil, AT&T and been a spokeswoman for brands such as Nike, Havaianas, and Pepsi.
Reverend Byrd says, “With much anticipation and excitement, my wife and I look forward to becoming active members of the vibrant community that exists in San Francisco. Opening the doors to all - inviting everyone join us as we move toward exciting new heights! We have splendid programs in store for youth and seniors - for everyone young and old – of every ethnicity!”
Since 1852, this elite congregation is embedded deeply in the history of San Francisco and in the black community as being one of the oldest Black congregations west of the Mississippi and was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and re-built.
